Rugby League needs a real “World” Cup.
Two years before the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, it is probably time to think about the contribution of the tournament to the global development of the sport.
It doesn’t help us being optimistic about the future, as we see that the countries qualifying, are consisted mainly of “heritage” players from Australia. Domestic players have no chance to represent their country in the World Cup.
The 2017 Rugby League World Cup, was interesting according to many fans of the game, but if someone cares for the future of League, it was a clear sign of a troubled situation. It was obvious that if there wasn’t NRL or/and other Aussie Leagues, the tournament wouldn’t have enough players to make it happen.
And if you take a second glance, you’ll realize that only four or five countries had players really representing the domestic sport.
Take a look at the statistics:
Australia – Genuine (all NRL palyers),
New Zealand - almost Genuine (23 in NRL, six of them in NZ Warriors and one in RFL),
PNG – Genuine (ten in PNG, two in RFL/SL and two in Australia,
England – Genuine (18 in RFL/SL and six in NRL),
France – Genuine (17 in France and 8 in England),
Samoa – no connection with domestic activity (23 NRL, 1 RFL),
Fiji - no real connection with domestic activity (only one in Fiji, 19 NRL, 2 RFL/SL, 1 in Australia and one in Toronto),
Scotland – no connection with domestic activity (none in Scotland, 9 RFL/SL, 9 in England, 3 NRL, one in Australia and two in Toulouse),
Tonga - no connection with domestic activity (none in Tonga, 18 in NRL, 6 RFL/SL),
Lebanon - no connection with domestic activity (1 in Lebanon, 13 NRL, 11 in Australia),
USA - almost genuine (eleven in USA, two in Canada, one in RFL and one in England, seven in Australia and one in Toulouse,
Wales – almost genuine (two play in Wales, twelve play in RFL, seven in various English teams, one in Toronto and two in Australia).
Ireland - no real connection with domestic activity (only two in Ireland, fifteen in RFL/SL, one in Australia plus one in NRL, four in England and one in Toronto),
Italy - no connection with domestic activity (only one in Italy, nine in NRL, two in RFL/SL, eight in Australia, one in England and one in France).
Australia, Papua New Guinea, England, France and USA, were consisted of players who had played mostly in their own countries and came from the domestic development. The others did not represent the domestic activity of their countries.
There are examples of countries with real domestic development: Russia, Serbia and South Africa, are operating domestic tournaments for many years but they could never compete the NRL players in the World Cup Qualifiers.
The RLIF did not support the genuine national teams to qualify. Russia and Serbia are full members for a long time and the Qualification rules were supposed to help them qualify if their opponents were just affiliated. But at the last minute, the RLIF promoted “Italy” afterwards in order to allow them qualify, despite the time limit was the end of 2016. Similarly, they created a group of two countries in order to help Lebanon qualify. Using such tricks, the International Body prevented Serbia and Russia from qualifying to the World Cup.
Despite the conspiracy theories, is NRL the future of the game?
Let’s take a look at the most developed sports of the globe: Football (soccer) and Basketball.
The first big scale international football (soccer) tournament, was the Olympics’ tournament at the 1900 and 1904 Games.
Professional players were not allowed in the Olympic Tournament until 1984. Since 1992 male competitors must be under 23 years old, and since 1996, players under 23 years old, with three over-23 year old players, are allowed per squad.
The FIFA policy about the Olympic tournament led to the development of more countries’ level. Although in most countries football is professional, the sport is still developing in international level as players under 23 year old, have the chance to play for their National / Olympic team.
The first basketball World Cup took place in 1950. The NBA players were not allowed to participate in it. The first year when NBA players were accepted in FIBA World Cup, was 1994. They dominated the tournament, but it was in 2002 when the United States team, made up entirely of NBA players, struggled to a sixth-place finish.
In 2006, the USA team, once more made up entirely of NBA players, lost the semi-final from Greece and finished third in the tournament.
The early World Cup years exclusion of the top professionals of the sport, led to the rising of the other nations’ level, which reached the top NBA level.
Talking about Rugby League World Cup, it is safe to claim that excluding players coming from the top professional leagues (NRL and Super League), shall give the chance to the rest of the players, teams and nations, develop further the sport and reach the professional level sooner or later.
So, the future calls us with a clear message: Let’s have a World Cup, without professional players, with strict domestic quota, in order to see some day our sport raising its’ level high, across the globe.

WORLD RUGBY LEAGUE REBELS POSE THE QUESTIONS

Wednesday 29th November 2017
The current growth strategies of international Rugby League have been called into question by the formation of a rival, fledgling global federation dedicated to promoting debate about the future of the 13-a-side code.
Whilst the 14 nation Rugby League World Cup approaches its finale, the breakaway World Rugby League, founded in 2016 by representatives of the sport from Greece, Italy and Pakistan as well as several ‘observer’ nations, recently presented its credentials to the Switzerland-based Sport Accord organization attached to the GAISF (Global Association of International Sport Federations).
Recently appointed WRL President and head of Rugby League in Greece Tasos Pantazidis commented: “The globalization of Rugby League, has always been one of the most crucial institutional issues about our great sport and it comes into sharp focus during a World Cup.
“New and emerging nations taking up the sport are increasingly calling for serious steps forward in the recognition of Rugby League from International Organizations like SportAccord and the International Olympic Committee. The WRL is a platform for that debate.
“A growing number of national Rugby League governing bodies, fully recognised by their own individual national sporting authorities, have opted to align themselves with the WRL due to our approach to the development and growth of the sport.
“We were invited by SportAccord for talks about the recognition procedure and the feedback so far has been outstanding. Unfortunately no such dialogue is taking place with the established international Rugby League body (IRL) and this will affect the integrity of our sport going forward,” added Tasos, one of three key players on the WRL board together with Secretary General Pierluigi Gentile from Italy and Vice President Ikram Butt, the first Muslim to play international Rugby League for England as well as being a Pakistan rugby union international.
Tasos went on: “Rugby League deserves to be recognized and a new vision about the future of the sport is now clear.
“The first key factor is the rivalry issue. We believe Rugby League representatives have to find common ground with rugby union. We fully understand the controversial nature of this strategy but it makes complete sense on so many levels. It is the ‘elephant in the room’ that stands in the way of real growth and development of Rugby League.
“We cannot turn back the clock to the 1890s. We must deal with the current context and many of our sport’s governing bodies are finding barriers in their way due to existing cultural allegiances adopted by our established international governing body.
“The second big issue is that we need to understand that the current approach of putting some names and flags on the map is not the way forward. This is a short sighted and shallow platform for growth that is alienating many within our sport.
“SportAccord and the GAISF calls for national governing bodies (NGBs) to be recognized by their own national Olympic Committees.
“There are numerous cases where groups of people claim that they have Federations or Associations but in practice, they are not recognized by anyone.
“In these cases people have to understand that recognition by the National Highest Sporting Authorities is the most important issue.  In order to be recognized Rugby League must have 40 recognized NGBs and we all know that it hasn’t,” added Tasos.
Ikram Butt, founder of the British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) and a founding member of Pakistan Rugby League commented: “This is all about laying the foundations for the growth of international Rugby League by building sustainable partnerships that facilitate increased participation.
“The WRL is categorically not about wrestling away sovereignty of the game but doing what is in its best interests based on the growing number of national associations who are finding that the current approach is simply not fit for purpose.
“The World Cup showcases the very best that the game has to offer but I want to see it develop and grow on a much more stable footing.
“A recent match held at the world famous Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad between Pakistan and Italy attracted over 5,000 and demonstrated the bridges that can be built. I’ve always been about building bridges,” added Ikram who is working on a rematch as well as planning for a ‘rebel’ World Cup 9s involving WRL member and observer nations.
Tasos summed up “In conclusion the WRL realize that co-operation and the strengthening of the domestic game are the most important factors in the future of our sport.
“We must follow the examples set by the most popular sports internationally and copy their practices of equality, fairness, justice and expansion. Rugby League cannot be allowed to exist in sporting isolation, cut off from valuable resources and organisations.
“We need the debate to happen with all parties and believe the WRL is a good vehicle to achieve that.”

Mr. Baumann

ΔΙΕΥΡΥΝΕΤΑΙ Η ΑΠΗΧΗΣΗ ΤΗΣ WORLD RUGBY LEAGUE / "WORLD RUGBY LEAGUE" RESONANCE IS WIDENING

ΔΙΕΥΡΥΝΕΤΑΙ Η ΑΠΗΧΗΣΗ ΤΗΣ WORLD RUGBY LEAGUE

WORLD RUGBY LEAGUE RESONANCE IS WIDENING

More and more countries are showing interest in joining the WORLD RUGBY LEAGUE.
The WRL was founded in March 2017 when 21 representatives of countries and institutions of the Rugby League met and decided to establish a new global confederation of the sport.
The Rugby League international community, troubled by the absence of a global federation / confederation that invests in local development, respects local laws and conditions, and supports the domestic institutions of the sport without trying to undermine them, has long sought a way out, finally concluding through many months of fermentation, in the establishment of the WRL.
WRL representing recognised bodies and initiatives of the sport from Europe, Asia, Africa and America has already applied for recognition by SportAccord (Global Association of International Sports Federations) and Global Sports. SportAccord had its’ convention in early April in Aarhus, Denmark, and, following a correspondence with the WRL, set up a working meeting to continue the process.
The WRL has adapted its statutes to the basis of Democracy, Collaboration, Respect for National Laws, the UN and IOC Charter and the WADA regulations. WRL members are already playing matches, while the first tournament under the auspices of the WRL will be held in the beginning of the summer.
Its aim is to organize a World Cup in 2018 on European soil.

So we look forward to the great moments...
